WHEN Sri Lanka won the World Cup trophy in 1996, Bangladesh was not even in the list of World Cup participants. Sri Lanka at that point of time was a new entrant to world cricket. Dav Whatmore (who later became coach of Bangladesh) guided Sri Lanka to reach that level. The young generation of that time hardly kept track of the development of cricket in Sri Lanka.Â
Bangladesh qualified for the World Cup after four years. By that time Sri Lanka had become a super power of cricket. On the field Sri Lanka was far more consistent and professional than their Asian neighbours. Today, we are in our teens as far as the playing cricket is concerned. In the past sixteen years, the number of Test matches played by us reached a hundred mark. We won test matches both at home and abroad. Although our maiden overseas test victory was against the West Indies, our performance was doubtful because the opponents could not field their best eleven due to some internal bickering. Â
But beating England at home and stretching Tests to the fifth day against mighty Indians unfolded our hidden talents. And the victory against Sri Lanka on its soil only confirmed that we are a cricket power to be reckoned with. Now we have nearly half a dozen mature and world class cricketers to play for the team. Host of other youngsters are playing and more are in the pipeline. This has been the positive sign for the present as well as the future of Bangladeshi Cricket. Recent New Zealand visit has made us earn more respect worldwide.Â
Slowly and steadily our team is displaying consistency and professionalism. Test temperaments will ultimately lead us to cricketing glory.Â
